Special Gearhead Construction

A custom-made maxon precision gearhead is the ideal solution for a motor that is powerful enough for motion, but has too high a speed and too low a torque.

The maxon Group has specialised in developing, manufacturing and marketing high-powered drive components and systems since 1970. Its product range covers motors, encoders and controllers as well as special and standard gearheads. As standard 28 planetary and spur gearheads in a total of 664 variations with diameters ranging from 6 - 81 mm are available. Special versions can also be supplied if required.

maxon operates a modern and progressive industrial plant in Sexau near the German town of Freiburg im Breisgau, employing around 200 motivated staff who develop and produre precision gearheads and components for highly dynamic microdrives. The facility produces basic parts as well as high-precision toothing forms.

maxon sometimes finds unusual ways of formulating ideas and realizing tailor-made solutions, such as the special planetary gearhead with two speeds on the output side. The motor shaft goes through the gearhead, resulting in two speeds with a mechanically fixed reduction ratio. maxon also produces worm gearheads and spindle drives in addition to special spur and planetary gearheads.

Standard methods are used at the plant such as milling, turning and cutting. Ceramic injection moulding (CIM) and metal injection moulding (MIM) also feature, as do mechanical microtechnology and the LIGA process which are used in the manufacture of microcomponents, such as toothing parts which can be produced with a module of only 60 µm.
